Tomorrow I am heading off to Massachusetts on the first leg of a trip that will include visits for friends in Boston, Bennington, and possibly Northampton. It'll be all on buses this time, unfortunately, as the train to Albany doesn't run in the beginning of the week. Here's a photo I took from the train at South Station in March:
Though Portland has a great many beautiful brick buildings, there are of course many that are far more prosaic. This is one of them:
One of my favorite aspects of riding trains is that they often travel through the most industrial --and most interesting-- parts of towns. I shot the following photos as we were passing through Massachusetts. The sun was setting, and I (for obvious reasons) couldn't use flash or long exposure, which I feel has lent them a vintage, almost otherworldly atmosphere.
Portland is a pretty old city, as far as US cities go. It's also very well-maintained, but a bit of grunge sneaks in around the edges... and I do love to take pictures of things that look like they've been around a while. I won't have any new photos until I either borrow a camera or get a new battery, but here is a promise of things to come:
This photo was taken about a month ago, when I took a trip to Massachusetts to visit my friend Miriam. She's living at Regis College, though she's not a student there (her school rents space from them). The campus is very impressive and godly and whatever, though the dorm she's living in is terrible. Here's some caution tape, just because I love that stuff.
